A Different Perspective on Shopping

Over my years as a stylist and personal shopper I have developed a much more discerning attitude to shopping, both for clients and myself. As it is working well, I would like to share it with you.

I now view each item I buy as an applicant to join the happy “team” working in my wardrobe. Therefore it has to go through a job “interview” to be accepted.

Choosing Sunglasses can be a nightmare.

Good sunglasses are expensive so think of them as an investment. They should offer good protection for your eyes and flatter your face. Unfortunately some high priced designer frames will do neither!

It is much easier to find flattering sunglasses than normal spectacles as there is always a wider choice of colours, shapes and styles. This can, of course, make it more confusing!

I have written these guidelines to help you make a wise investment.

Spring is coming ……be prepared!

If, like me, you have not had a winter holiday you may be feeling a little pale and wan. We can long for the warmth of the sun and in this country that can take us by surprise even in March. So it is time to start working on skin, hair and nails so we are prepared and ready to feel good in our spring and summer wardrobe. This does not mean having to invest in luxurious creams and other expensive products.

What IS a Capsule Wardrobe

What is a Capsule Wardrobe? We are all familiar with the phrase “capsule wardrobe”, and many women would love to know how to create one as it simplifies shopping and dressing into an apparently effortless process. The attraction lies in making the whole thing easy. No stress. I use the word “apparently” because this nirvana can never be achieved by accident. A capsule wardrobe is a limited collection of versatile, interchangeable pieces that will create perfect outfits for any occasion. I have read so many articles professing to have the solution, but there is no exact formula that works for all because we are all different. To be successful it must compliment your colouring and shape, express your true personality, be appropriate for your lifestyle and keep you current.

Why did men stop wearing high heels?

For generations they have signified femininity and glamour - but a pair of high heels was once an essential accessory for men!!
Beautiful, provocative, sexy - high heels may be all these things and more, but even their most ardent fans, (like me!), wouldn't claim they were practical.
High heels are no good for hiking or driving. Women in heels are advised to stay off the grass - and also ice, cobbled streets and posh floors. And high heels may not be very comfortable and get stuck in things.
It is almost as though they just weren't designed for walking in.
Originally, they weren't.

Communication and Influence through Style

Our Style will transmit a message about us, with or without our permission, and consequently will influence how others perceive us.

Style is the balance between a person and their appearance; the marriage of physical characteristics and personality expressed in a visual way. Like a marriage this can be harmonious or not!! When a person achieves the perfect balance they look and feel their best. We may not be able to define precisely why someone looks good but we consciously appreciate the overall effect created by wearing clothing in flattering colours and shapes reflected in quietly confident body language. Style is far deeper than buying the latest expensive fashions and expecting them to do the work.

Who decided there is a right or wrong side to age?

Isn’t our Queen marvelous? I resisted saying “Isn’t our Queen marvelous for 86?” The fact she is 86 makes her even more incredible and should heighten our admiration for her tireless energy!! Most of us would sag just thinking about her exhausting schedule over the last few weeks yet she has appeared looking fresh and consistently stylish throughout. She is such an inspiration to the nation.

Red, White and Blue

There is a lot of it about! With all the Jubilee celebrations and the forthcoming Olympics many of us will be invited to at least one themed celebration andhave to create an appropriately patriotic outfit for the occasion. Wrapping yourself in a Union Jack may not be a practical solution! Luckily there are some great things in all the shops if you can’t rustle up an ensemble from your wardrobe.

However, a word of warning! These are 3 of the most difficult colours to wear, especially white!!

Bold pattern or block colour?     Your choice!

The shops will soon be full of bold prints in everything including bags and shoes. Some women will love the clashing colours and the drama of it all, and others will hate it because they don’t really like patterns much anyway, and certainly not the “in your face” variety that this season favours.

So which camp do you fall into?

What will 2012 hold for you?

Rather than making resolutions you may not keep and then feel guilty about breaking (why do we carry on doing this every year?) why not think in terms of a longer term goal for 2012. Setting some kind of positive target for what you want to get from life this year is much more appealing than telling yourself you are going to deny yourself things!
